In an excerpt published on the channel’s website, Francis was asked about his plans to visit Ukraine and Russia after his recent trip to Canada to promote dialogue for the end of hostilities between the two countries.
“Now I can’t go because after the trip to Canada there was a little setback with the recovery of the knee and the doctor has forbidden itsaying ‘you can’t travel to Kazakhstan,'” Francis said.
“But I have been keeping in touch by phone. Between all of us, something could be done. I am following (the situation) with my pain and my prayers. But the situation is really tragic“, he said. “I always believe that through dialogue, progress is made.”
In an exclusive interview with Reuters in July, Pope Francis said he wanted to visit kyiv, but he also wanted to go to Moscow, preferably first, to promote peace. He later explained that he had suffered “a small fracture” in his knee by taking a wrong step while a ligament was inflamed.
Francisco had to be in the Kazakh capital of Nur-Sultan to attend the VII Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions.
The Vatican recently had to evoke its condemnations of the war to mend strained relations with Ukraine, after Pope Francis upset kyiv by referring to the Russian ultra-nationalist Daria Duginakilled by a car bomb near Moscow, like an innocent victim of war.
Francisco’s mobility limitations, as a result of his knee problem, have cost him the cancellation of several trips in the last year, further fueling rumors of an eventual resignation from the highest position of the Catholic Church.
Those rumors increased last week after the Pope appointed new cardinals, which would leave him in a majority position within the Conclave that should choose his successor.
