City street: activists chained themselves to train tracks

According to the police, around 15 people chained themselves to train tracks and track systems at the Hirschstetten train station in Vienna-Donaustadt in order to stop the dismantling of the tracks for road construction. The site is currently being secured together with the ÖBB, the activists are to be removed, the APA said.

According to the protest movement, the evacuation had already begun in the morning hours, spokeswoman Anna Kontriner told APA. “Only yesterday we cleared our camp, today we’re back. We’ll be a spanner in the works until the destruction of our livelihoods finally stops,” it said in a broadcast.

Late on Monday afternoon, the protest movement dismantled its camp in Anfanggasse and at the same time announced further demonstrations. On Monday there were demonstrations in front of the SPÖ Donaustadt party headquarters on Kagraner Platz. According to “LobauBleibt”, the city government threatened to have the camp cleared “under false pretexts”. This was a “legally registered, constitutionally protected rally”. “We don’t want to wait for the city of Vienna to let the police evict us from here: we keep moving and continue our protest in a different form. A lot is planned,” announced Jutta Matysek, who registered the meeting.
