Congress removed its president

The ouster of Camones, who had taken office in late July, underscores how the administration of leftist President Pedro Castillo is pressing against a hostile Congress that has already tried twice to remove him from power.

Long-standing institutional crisis

Pedro Castillo and his prime minister have criticized the performance of the prosecutor’s office, which he accuses of playing into the hands of the opposition in Congress that seeks to remove him with their investigations.

The prosecution announced on Monday through the Twitter the inclusion of Torres, in his capacity as former Minister of Justice a few months ago, in the preliminary investigation “for the crime of criminal organization” facing the president.

The president was in the prosecutor’s office for two and a half hours declaring on Monday and on his return to the presidential house he approached dozens of supporters outside the Government Palace, to whom he promised to give him an audience to attend to their needs.

Pedro Castillo, who after his election scared the investors before moderating his leftist stance, he has sought in recent weeks the support from social organisations, trade unions and regional authorities to face the accusations involving his own family, which he claims are the product of a conspiracy by his opponents and powerful groups.
