At the beginning of the previous school year in Upper Austria, more children than ever before (1408) had been withdrawn from classes, the number has now more than halved again: From Monday, a total of 625 compulsory school children will be taught by their parents at home. The reasons for the cancellations are likely to be found in the corona pandemic (refusal to test, wearing masks, etc.).
The number is still higher than before the Corona crisis: At that time, an average of 300 children were deregistered. LH Deputy and State Councilor for Education (VP) Christine Haberlander and Director of Education Alfred Klampfer were pleased with this development yesterday. At the same time, the parents were once again appealed to “reconsider their decision”, since the students would be deprived of important social contacts as a result of home schooling.
Fewer vocational students
A total of 108,984 compulsory school students will be going to school starting Monday, 0.17 percent fewer than in the previous school year. A significant increase (plus 1.80 percent) can be seen in secondary schools.
It is still unclear exactly how many children from Ukraine will take part in the lessons. As of July 8, 1389 were registered, the majority of them in compulsory schools. Haberlander is “concerned” about the decline in vocational students from 25,058 (2021/22) to the current 24,554 (minus 2.01 percent).
