Unlike the West, China pays in rubles and yuan

“A transition has been made to make payments for Russian gas deliveries to China in local currencies, the ruble and the yuan,” Gazprom said in the statement.

This new rapprochement between Russia and China takes place in a tense context with the West, more than six months after the start of the Russian offensive in Ukraine.

Between January and August 2022, Gazprom extracted 288.1 billion cubic meters of gas, 14.6% less than the same period a year earlier, according to preliminary data released on September 1. However, exports to China “increased” and “regularly exceeded daily contractual quantities,” Gazprom said in a statement, without giving figures.

In a videoconference meeting, Miller also informed his Chinese counterpart from the state group CNPC of the progress of work to link the Kovikta gas field to the “Force of Siberia” gas pipeline, which links Russia and China.

According to Gazprom, this connection, scheduled before the end of the year, will allow “increasing the volume of gas deliveries to China in 2023.” On Tuesday, new long-term gas purchase and sale agreements were signed through that route.
