Teacher shortages have worsened significantly

How many teachers are really missing at schools in Upper Austria? That’s what club chairman Michael Lindner and third state parliament president Peter Binder (both SP) wanted to know from education officer and deputy governor Christine Haberlander (VP). The answers to the written question show that the shortage has increased significantly. Accordingly, there is a need above all in German, English, mathematics, exercise and sport, computer science, physics and chemistry. In German, for example, there is a shortage of 95 full-time teachers at secondary schools, 27 more than in the previous year. In the case of exercise and sport, the teacher deficit has risen from 138 to 168.

A good part of the lessons is now taken over by teachers who have not been trained accordingly. In physics it is 38.4 percent of the total weekly hours, in computer science even 67.7 percent.

Lindner accuses state politics of waiting too long and covering up the problem. With regard to the measures, Haberlander relies on advertising. At the end of 2022, posters and folders will be used to advertise the profession at 166 schools that offer high school graduation. Minister of Education Martin Polaschek (VP) presented measures at a meeting with representatives of the teacher training colleges and universities in Linz on Wednesday: “Better study feasibility” and a “faster career start” should inspire young people for the classroom. There is also a need for attractive opportunities to get qualified career changers into the system. However, the minister rejects a “downgrading” of teacher training.
