US imposes new sanctions on Iran over drone shipments to Russia

The United States will impose sanctions on the Revolutionary Guards and several Iranian companies involved in the supply of combat “drones” to Russia for use in the conflict in Ukraine, the US Treasury Department said on Thursday.

The sanctions are mainly aimed at the Revolutionary Guards, Iran’s paramilitary corps, which has already been the target of a number of measures, in particular because of the Iranian nuclear issue, and is also on the US “black list” of “terrorist organizations.”

“The United States intends to strictly enforce all of our sanctions against Russia and Iran and hold accountable anyone who, like Iran, decides to support Russia in its war of aggression against Ukraine,” Brian Nelson, Treasure for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence.

Several companies engaged in the research, development and production of “drones”, as well as the Iranian company responsible for transporting them to Russia, are also direct targets of sanctions.

The envisaged sanctions relate, in particular, to the freezing of all assets and property of these companies in the United States and increase the risk that international companies doing business with interested parties will themselves be subject to sanctions.

Faced with the difficulties faced by the Russian army in the conflict in Ukraine and significant losses of military equipment, Moscow has made several arms purchases in recent weeks from Iran, as well as from North Korea.

Iran announced on Monday that it is considering acquiring Russian Su-35 fighter jets, according to Iranian Air Force chief General Hamid Vahedi.

The military offensive launched on February 24 by Russia in Ukraine has already caused the flight of more than 13 million people – more than six million internally displaced people and more than seven million to European countries – according to the latest UN figures, which rank this migration crisis as the worst in Europe since World War II (1939-1945).

The Russian invasion, justified by Putin as the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security, was condemned by the international community as a whole, which responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and imposing political and economic sanctions against Russia.

The UN has presented as confirmed since the beginning of the war, which entered its 197th day today, 5,718 civilians killed and 8,199 wounded, stressing that these figures are much lower than the real ones.
