The Constitutional Court today dismissed an appeal filed by the National Union for the Total Independence of Angoa (UNITA), Angolan’s largest opposition party, stressing that the evidence presented “does not allow us to question the overall results” of the elections announced by the Commission National Electoral Commission (NEC).
According to Presiding Judge Laurinda Cardoso, the electoral trial phase is over and the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, Vice President Esperanza da Costa and the elected members of the National Assembly must carry out their respective functions.
Last week, CNE President Manuel Pereira da Silva released the final protocols of the August 24 general elections, in which the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and its candidate João Lourenço were declared the winners with 51.17% of the vote. , followed by UNITA with 43.95%.
With these results, the MPLA elected 124 deputies and UNITA 90 deputies, almost twice as many as in the 2017 elections.
The PRS party and the debuting Humanist Party of Angola (PHA) each elect two deputies.
CASA-CE, the National Patriotic Alliance (APN) and P-Njango did not receive seats in the National Assembly, which will consist of 220 deputies in 2022-2027.
