The number of confirmed cases in Portugal has risen to 898.

The number of confirmed cases of monkeypox virus infection in Portugal rose to 898, 27 more than the total reported in the past week, the Directorate General of Health (DGS) said on Thursday.

“All regions of the Portuguese mainland and the Autonomous Region of Madeira reported cases, of which 641 (77%) in the medical region of Lisbon and Tagus Valley,” the DGS weekly report on the development of the disease in the country said.

Until Wednesday, 831 cases had been reported to SINAVEmed (National Epidemiological Surveillance System), most of them in the 30 to 39 age group (44%), according to the health authority.

According to the DGS, 99% of infections were registered in men (823), with eight cases in women.

The DGS also reported that the recent average number of new confirmed cases of monkeypox virus infection “confirms the slowdown observed in notification and, approximately, in transmission.”

On July 16, the first close contacts were vaccinated, and 400 people were vaccinated until last Sunday, the department headed by Graça Freitas also said, noting that the relevant contacts are in different regions of the country.

From January 1 to September 7, the World Health Organization reported 54,707 confirmed cases and 397 probable human cases of VMPX virus infection in 102 countries, with 18 deaths.

The number of new cases reported worldwide fell by 25.5% in the week of August 29 to September 4, compared with the previous seven days, according to data provided by DGS.

Top 10 countries with the most cases: United States of America (19,833), Spain (6,749), Brazil (5,525), France (3,646), Germany (3,505), United Kingdom (3,484), Peru (1,724) . , Canada (1289), the Netherlands (1172) and Colombia (938), which together account for 87.5% of reported infections worldwide.

The most common symptoms of monkeypox infection are fever, severe headache, muscle aches, back pain, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes with a progressive rash that affects the skin and mucous membranes.

A sick person is not contagious until complete healing and crusting of the skin lesions, a period that can eventually exceed four weeks.

The monkeypox virus is transmitted through close physical contact, such as trauma or bodily fluids, or through contact with contaminated materials such as sheets, towels, or personal utensils.
