The former director of the Kaiser-Therme Bad Ischl was an extremely active member of the Lions Club of the imperial city. “With him, we not only lose one of our longest-serving members, but one of our most deserving ones,” said Lions spokesman Alfred Reimair.
Werner Riener was a member of the Ischler Club for 48 years, and the values and ideals of the Lions movement were always very important to him. Reimair: “Both during his professional career as director of the then Kaiser-Therme and in retirement, Werner was intensively committed to the Lions Club and was available to him in a wide variety of functions and activities.” Riener was president three times, held the position of club champion four times and was present in a number of other roles on the board. For 30 years he organized the Lions shooting, a traditional event that brings together Lions from all over the Salzkammergut and beyond in Bad Ischl.
“Werner Riener never shied away from clear words when it came to bringing his opinion to the club’s internal discussions,” Reimair recalled of his deceased friend. “He was also very concerned about maintaining international contacts as part of the twinning of the Ischler Lions with their partner clubs in Portogruaro, Prien and Dresden. Werner maintained a long-standing personal friendship with several Italian Lions, while erecting a monument for the former Austrian Chancellor Julius He made a significant contribution to Raab in Portogruaro.”
Werner Riener received the Melvin Jones Award, the highest Lions award, for his diverse services to Lions International and the Ischler Club. His commitment was honored at the funeral service by the current club president, Othmar Berner. Furthermore, Heinz Mayrhofer, as a personal friend of many years, thanked Klaus Enengl for the Skal-Club and Governor a. D. Josef Pühringer the deceased for his work and commitment.
