Bystander woman dies after illegal car race

A 26-year-old drove his vehicle through an intersection on the Schottenring when it was red and crashed into the car of a 48-year-old woman, who died as a result. The slightly injured 26-year-old was arrested. Witnesses reported a race with another car driver. This is fleeting, but a video of the incident was secured.

According to the police broadcast, the fatal accident occurred at 7.45 p.m. at the Vienna Stock Exchange. The 26-year-old drove along the ring road at high speed. When he ignored the red traffic light at the intersection with Wipplingerstrasse, there was a collision with the car of the 48-year-old who wanted to cross the ring road. According to police spokesman Markus Dittrich, the woman’s car threw itself onto a sidewalk and hit the rear against a pedestrian traffic light, and the speeder’s around 15-year-old Mercedes came to a stop on tram rails. Both drivers were alone in their vehicles.

The woman was trapped in her badly damaged car. When the fire brigade arrived, the injured person was already being treated by an employee of the Vienna rescue control center who happened to be present, the professional fire brigade reported in a broadcast. The emergency services opened the vehicle with hydraulic equipment and handed the woman over to the Viennese professional rescue service. After emergency medical care, she was taken to the emergency room of a hospital, where, according to the police, she succumbed to her serious injuries.

The slightly injured 26-year-old initially made no statement. However, the Syrian citizen announced to the police that he would like to comment on the accident after consulting his lawyer, Dittrich reported. He was temporarily arrested by order of the Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office. A public health officer found that the young man was not only apparently driving too fast, but was also overtired.

The driver who, according to witnesses, had a race with the 26-year-old drove away from the scene of the accident and was still unknown on Monday morning. However, the passenger of a vehicle driving behind the speeders filmed the incident and gave the video to the police. The investigators are now trying to find out the driver and the vehicle – presumably a black BMW.

According to the fire brigade, the scene of the accident was partially closed to traffic during the operation, which lasted until 9:30 p.m., and the tram lines in the direction of the Danube Canal were discontinued. The two accident wrecks had to be removed from the crossing area and the damaged traffic light mast had to be cut and removed by the firefighters.
