Pope Francis asked industrialists to create sources of work

The Pontiff called for “greater commitment from companies to provide decent work,” at this unprecedented time given Europe’s energy crisis that is deepening as Russia further limits natural gas exports to Europe, that forces governments to implement extraordinary and unprecedented plans to protect many businesses on the brink of closure and consumers who received exorbitant bills as the region slides into recession.

Francis asked to create jobs

In such a delicate and socially sensitive moment that forces the old continent to enter a period of austerity, the salary issue was at the center of the clear message that the Holy Father addressed to the industrialists. “Create jobs”, said the Pope, “generates a certain equality in their companies and in society.” “It is true that there is a hierarchy in companies, it is true that there are different functions and salaries, but salaries should not be too different”. “Today, the part of the value that goes to work is too small, especially when compared to the part that goes to financial income and top management salaries.”

A few days before the next political elections in Italy and taking stock of the situation in the country, Bonomi explained to the Pontiff “Today, what causes us great concern is not only the effects of the appalling war in Ukraine, the costs of energy and the persistent underemployment in our country, but rather the wave of bewilderment, mistrust and social suffering expressed by too large a part of Italian society”.

Pope Francis acknowledged for his part that “this moment is not easy, for you and for everyone. The business world is also suffering a lot. The pandemic has put a lot of pressure on so many productive activities, the entire economic system has been affected. wounded and now the war in Ukraine has been added to the resulting energy crisis”. “The good businessman also suffers in these crises – stressed the Pontiff -, who has the responsibility of his company, of his work, and who feels uncertainties and risks about himself”.

According to Francis, “In the market there are ‘mercenary’ businessmen and businessmen similar to the good shepherd who suffer the same suffering as their workers.”

Finally, the Supreme Pontiff asked the industrial sector to pay taxes, explaining that “taxes are also a way of sharing wealth, so that it becomes a common good, such as public services, schools, health, rights, science, culture, as the Italian Constitution says”.
