At a press conference, Benítez added that there were prison guards who were taken hostage, while others had their weapons taken away.
The deceased in the Concepción Regional Penitentiary was identified as Alexander Cabrera Fernández, 25 years old and with a history of aggravated robbery, sources close to the local newspaper Última Hora detailed.
The Ministry of Justice initiated an internal investigation into the events recorded in the Concepción prison.
Although for the Minister of Justice, Édgar Olmedo, the criminal faction of the First Capital Command (PCC) is the biggest problem in Paraguay’s prisons, he clarified that on this occasion there were no members of this group of Brazilian origin and linked to drug trafficking in the area where the violence had started.
“The riot begins in a pavilion where the PCC is not located. Access to the pavilion was forced and then an attempt was made to reach the access to the prison, but they were repelled by prison officers,” Olmedo explained to the local Monumental radio station.
According to the official, a firearm used by the inmates has not yet been found and it is presumed that it was irregularly admitted to the prison.
Likewise, he mentioned that they are aware of a probable action by the PCC after the Day of the Virgin of Mercy, patron saint of persons deprived of liberty, which is commemorated on September 24.
