Rodríguez Pérez, the first high-ranking soldier detained in this case, commanded the military police battalion of Iguala and surrounding municipalities on the day of the attack.

According to federal officials, the brigadier was arrested yesterday afternoon by the Federal Ministerial Police (PFM) and transferred to the Military Camp 1-A prison.

Mejía Berdeja specified that after the report of the Commission for Truth and Access to Justice in the Ayotzinapa Case, chaired by the Undersecretary for Human Rights, Alejandro Encinas, so far four arrest warrants have been issued against members of the Army and the figure could rise to 20, reported the local newspaper Milenio.

The report stated that the military and officials, due to their “actions, omissions or participation,” allowed the kidnapping and death of the students of the Ayotzinapa normal school and six other people at the hands of the Guerreros Unidos drug cartel. According to Encinas, Rodríguez Pérez ordered the murder and disappearance of the students.

In addition to the arrest of Rodríguez Pérez, the Police arrested two other soldiers, who were also transferred to the Campo Militar prison, identified as probable perpetrators of crimes for the disappearance of the students.

Along the same lines, he added that Judge Samuel Ventura Ramos, who acquitted the former mayor of Iguala José Luis Abarca and 97 others implicated in the events, will be investigated in accordance with the processes established by law.

“That decision is going to be challenged by the Federal Public Ministry, in such a way that Abarca and these 19 co-participants will not be released from prison,” Mejía Berdeja guaranteed.

The decisions of Judge Ventura Ramos to acquit 98 detainees in the Ayotzinapa case are “one of those strange things even if they are legal,” said López Obrador.
