This is the result of an IMAS survey commissioned by the specialist retailer Intersport. 94 percent of parents confirm the value of sport at a young age, but only every second person moves often with their children. 18 percent of Austrians are reluctant to exercise, but overall there is a slight trend towards more sport, it said. “Children today often lack basic motor skills. Many children can no longer do a somersault or balance on a balance beam. That is alarming,” reported Intersport Managing Director Thorsten Schmitz.
We are “average athletes”
According to the Intersport report, adults in this country are average athletes. According to their own statements, 73 percent exercise at least once a week. That is more than in the 2019 survey, where 67 percent said so. According to the current survey, 15 percent exercise five times a week or more.
Cycling (38 percent), swimming (23 percent) and running (19 percent) are the most popular activities, followed by hiking and working out in the gym (16 percent) in fourth place. There was a change in the preferred days: “While sport was on the agenda at the beginning of the week during the pandemic, sporting activities have now shifted to the weekend. Sunday is a day off,” explained Schmitz.
