More than 150 heads of state and government have been announced, including US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron. It is unlikely that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj would attend in person, as traveling there would pose an increased security risk for him. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin will not be there either. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will travel in his place.
Appointments with Erdogan and Guterres
Austria is represented by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg. On Wednesday, Van der Bellen, Nehammer and Schallenberg have a meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. One of the topics will be the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and its consequences for global food security.
Prior to this, Van der Bellen will meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Bilaterally, the mood between Vienna and Ankara had been frosty for a long time. At the end of June, however, there was a meeting between Erdogan and Chancellor Nehammer in Madrid.
Nehammer will meet former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger on Monday evening. Several bilateral talks are also planned, including with the heads of government of Iraq and Pakistan and the President of Serbia.
