When asked by the Rossiya-1 television network about a replacement in the Russian energy strategy of the European Nord Stream 2 by the Asian Siberian Force 2, Novak answered “yes”.
Earlier in the day, the minister, aside from a trip to Uzbekistan, had stated that Russia and China would soon sign agreements on the delivery of “50,000 million cubic meters of gas” per year through the future Siberian Force 2 gas pipeline.
This volume will almost represent the maximum capacity of Nord Stream 1 –55,000 million m³ in total–, which has been stopped since September 2.

Until then, a third of Russian gas deliveries to the European Union were supplied through this strategic gas pipeline, which links Russia and Germany.
Siberian Force 2 will power energy-intensive China, partly through Mongolia. The construction start date is set for 2024.
In Europe, Russian gas exports to the EU will be “down 50 billion cubic meters” in 2022, Novak said on Thursday.
At the same time, the Russian minister indicated that Gazprom, the operator of the Siberian Force 1 gas pipeline that has linked the Yakutia region with northeast China since the end of 2019, “will increase its supplies” to reach “20,000 million m³ of gas ” every year.
The connection to the gas pipeline at the beginning of 2023 of the Kovytka field, near Lake Baikal, will help facilitate a significant increase.
In 2025, when it will have reached its maximum capacity, this important gas pipeline will transfer 61,000 million cubic meters per year, that is, more than the Nord Stream 1. Of that figure, 38,000 million m³ will be destined for China according to an important contract signed in 2014 between Gazprom and its Chinese counterpart CNPC.
