Through a statement, the papal spokesman, Matteo Bruni, reported: “The Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations, the religious Paul Gallagher, will represent Pope Francis on Monday at the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II” .

The words of the Pope on the death of the queen

Shortly after the death of Elizabeth II was made known, the Supreme Pontiff sent an extensive telegram to his son and new king, Charles III.

“Deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, I offer my deepest condolences to Her Majesty, the members of the Royal Family, the people of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth,” he said.

“I willingly join all who mourn her loss in praying for the late Queen’s eternal repose, and in paying tribute to her life of tireless service to the good of the Nation and the Commonwealth, her example of devotion to the duty, his unwavering testimony of faith in Jesus Christ and his firm hope in his promises,” Francis added.

More than 500 guests

The ceremony will feature more than 500 guests, including the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern; the president of the United States, Joe Biden, together with his wife, Jill Biden, as well as the president of France, Emmanuel Macron, of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, of Canada, Justin Trudeau or of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

While the first lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, will represent her country at the funeral that will take place in Westminster Abbey.
