The station wagon rolls across the screen in bright orange. And the crisp world premiere of the MG4 opens the eyes of the spectators. Look, this is how e-mobility works! Have the Chinese finally taken the lead when it comes to electric mobility? One would almost like to answer: yes. Because the Stromer with the smart shape is able to convince with top technology, very good user-friendliness and an attractive price tag. What a comeback for the former British brand in Europe!

The outfit was drawn by designers in the London MG studio, supported by Chinese colleagues. The European elements are good for the local eye. A little borrowing from Tesla (wedge-shaped front), clear SUV ingredients (black paneling on the sides) and the ultra-modern pointed at the rear, that pleases between Bulgaria and Portugal. The striking, split rear spoiler is likely to become a trademark. Xinyu Liu, CEO of MG Motor Europe, also speaks of a milestone. The sporty station wagon MG4 is an “intelligent alternative”.

The five-door, the first model on the extremely flexible MSP platform, stretches 4.28 meters. The long wheelbase of 2.70 meters creates a lot of space inside – MG specifies the trunk volume as 363 to 1177 liters (standard & comfort equipment), with the Luxury the loading capacity is reduced to 350 to 1165 liters.

The cockpit display measures seven inches, the touchscreen in the middle measures 10.25 inches. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are on board, various functions can be controlled via the MG app. The package of assistants is packed to the brim – from adaptive cruise control (ACC) to high beam control and traffic sign recognition.

The MG4 is available from 32,990 euros. Two new versions will follow soon: an all-wheel drive vehicle and a model with a 77 kWh battery and a range of 500 kilometers.

MG4: The technique

MG offers two battery sizes: 51 and 64 kWh. This means that 350 or 450 km can be driven with one charge. The smaller battery can be charged with 6.6 kW (AC) or 117 kW (DC), the larger unit with 11 kW (AC) or 135 kW (DC). The entry-level model is equipped with a 125 kW rear engine, while the top-of-the-line model has a 150 kW rear engine. The standard variant weighs 1655 kg empty, the comfort or luxury version 1685 kg empty. Towing capacity: 500 kilograms.
