Officials stopped the vehicle with a Polish license plate at a gas station in Freistadt shortly after midnight. In the car were a 26-year-old and a 42-year-old, both Georgian citizens. When the police officers checked the ID and vehicle documents of the two men, the 26-year-old suddenly stepped on the gas. The patrol immediately gave chase northwards. A check of the men showed that the 42-year-old was banned from entering and staying in the Schengen area. He is also wanted in the state of Salzburg for theft.
Shortly after the Deutsch-Hörschlag border crossing, the trail of the fugitives was lost. The vehicle was later found in a ditch. The men may have continued their escape on foot. The search was called off shortly after 2 a.m.
In cooperation with the Czech colleagues, the police officers searched the car and found suitcases, bags, clothes and a new tool box in the trunk. There was also a wallet with cash in the back seat. The police assume that the goods are stolen. The investigation was handed over to the Czech criminal police.
