The president threatened a “substantial” response from the United States if Moscow took this step that would “change the course of the war in a way not seen since World War II.”
Biden’s warning comes after a week in which Ukrainian troops recaptured swathes of Russian-occupied territory in the northeast and south of the country, thanks to a boost from Western military aid.
Russia “would become even more of a pariah in the world, more than ever” if it uses such weapons, said the US president, who spoke of a fear of a change of course by the Kremlin to recover lost territories.
Putin, however, assured yesterday that the Kremlin has not changed its plans after the setback in recent days: “We are not in a hurry.”
“The kyiv authorities announced that they had started a counteroffensive… We will see how it ends,” Putin said.
He added that the Kremlin’s goal remains “the liberation of the entire territory of Donbass”, the mining basin in eastern Ukraine formed by the Lugansk region – in the hands of the Russian army – and the Donetsk region, partially occupied by Moscow.
