Road Olympic champion Anna Kiesenhofer celebrated a red-white-red success yesterday at the start of the cycling world championships in Australia with tenth place in the individual time trial. After 34 kilometers in Wollongong, the Lower Austrian was 1:56 minutes behind the victorious Ellen van Dijk (Ned). The joy in the local ÖRV camp was overshadowed by an expanding corona problem.
The reigning state time trial champion Christina Schweinberger did not compete in the time trial due to mild symptoms and a positive test by her sister and roommate Kathrin. The virus was not detected in her on Sunday, but an ÖRV supervisor tested positive. In addition, Lukas Pöstlberger is stuck in Belgium in Covid quarantine. The man from Schwanenstadt is currently not allowed to travel to Australia, so his start in the road race next Sunday is a long way off. But Pöstlberger, whose contract with the Bora team was not extended after eight years with him, still had good news. “My new team will be announced in a few days,” revealed the 30-year-old to OÖN. For the mixed relay of the World Cup on Wednesday, however, he is no longer a candidate. The ÖRV is even considering not starting.
Tobias Foss (Nor) surprisingly secured the men’s time trial title. Defending champion Filippo Ganna (It), who soon wants to tackle the hourly world record, only ended up in seventh place.
Yesterday, Emanuel Zangerle (Team Tirol) won the Bundesliga race in Kufstein, Daniel Turek (Felbermayr Wels) took overall victory. The Czech will switch to a professional team abroad next season. The team ranking went to Hrinkow Advarics Steyr. (free)
