New wind turbine “inspired” after delay

The construction work for the new wind turbine in Munderfing is entering its final phase: before the weekend, the 66 meter long rotor blades were attached at a height of 120 meters to the top of the tower.

After delays due to delivery difficulties, it should not be long before the latest addition to the Munderfing wind farm goes into operation. The system in the Braunau district will then produce the average electricity consumption of 13,000 households annually, previously it was 10,000.

According to Adam Riese, this means that the sixth wind turbine will produce significantly more than the five that have been in operation for several years. This is made possible by technical progress: the new wheel is 20 meters higher than the existing ones, and the rotor blades are ten meters longer. Only advances in crane technology have made it possible for systems of this size to be erected in the last few years.

The components have come a long way: the tower comes from Vietnam, the rotor blades from Mexico. The costs amount to around 5.6 million euros, and the system will pay for itself in around 13 years, says operator Erwin Moser. Three quarters of the wind farm is owned by the municipality and 14.7 percent by Energie AG. The remaining ten percent are held by the Munderfing energy workshop, which was responsible for the planning and construction management of the project. The federal government provides subsidies, but you have to apply for them first.

The Munderfingers have now gotten used to their wind turbines, says Moser. There were no reservations or objections to the new system. “Probably because people’s fears didn’t materialize,” he says.
