The driver of the van, a 43-year-old Romanian, is still receiving hospital treatment, said Helmut Marban, spokesman for the Burgenland state police command, on Monday at the APA request. On the run from a control, the heavily overcrowded van crashed into a group of trees on the L205 near the Hungarian border. All 16 occupants suffered injuries, two of them serious. They were taken or flown to nearby hospitals.
The 15 refugees come from India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. They immediately applied for asylum and are to be questioned as witnesses to the accident. Eleven people were able to leave the hospital on Sunday evening.
The Eisenstadt public prosecutor’s office has applied for remand for the suspected smuggler. He will also be questioned by investigators as soon as possible.
