Francis called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to respect the ceasefire

Francis’ request

After two days of clashes, a ceasefire between the parties has been in force since Wednesday, after Armenia denounced that at least 135 people were killed in the week’s hostilities.

Azerbaijan reported 71 deaths among its armed forces. “Peace is possible when weapons fall silent and dialogue begins,” the Pope said.

The clashes are the bloodiest since those that occurred in 2020 in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, with a majority Armenian population and which both countries have been fighting since it decided to separate in 1988 from the then Soviet Socialist Republic of Azerbaijan.

This week, During his trip to Kazakhstan, the Pope had already expressed his wish that “peaceful dialogue and harmony” prevail in the Caucasus.

Pelosi in Yerevan

Meanwhile, in the midst of the new escalation between the two countries, the president of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, arrived in Yerevan, the Armenian capital, and condemned the recent “illegal” attacks by Azerbaijan against Armenia

“We strongly condemn these attacks, on behalf of the (United States) Congress,” Pelosi told a news conference from the Armenian capital, accusing Azerbaijan of initiating the violence that has caused more than 200 deaths and threatening, she said, “the prospect of a much-needed peace deal.

“Armenia is of particular importance to us due to the focus on security after an illegal and deadly attack by Azerbaijan on Armenian territory,” he added.

The Democratic congresswoman maintained that the attack was an “assault on the sovereignty of Armenia.”

Hostilities between the bitter enemies of the Caucasus ended on Thursday night thanks to the mediation of the United States, Armenian parliament spokesman Alen Simonyan said. Russia’s previous attempts to broker a truce have failed.
