TV images showed Heerey bowing in front of the closed coffin in Westminster Hall. “I was the last person to pay my respects to the Queen and it felt like a real privilege to do so,” the British Air Force member said afterwards.

“It’s one of the highlights of my life and I’m honored to be here,” Heerey said. Westminster Hall in London’s Parliament closed to the public at 6.30am local time (7.30am BST) in preparation for the Queen’s state funeral at nearby Westminster Abbey. Since Wednesday, thousands of people had said goodbye to the Queen and had to wait hours for it. The queue stretched several kilometers through central London.
