24 hours – that’s how long Sonja Kimeswenger waited to take a look at the Queen’s funeral procession in London. She “survived the night on the side of the road well” with a sleeping bag and camping chair, as she says on the phone. “But comfort is something else. It was extremely uncomfortable. But then I had my feet free in the first row.”
And the parade of the emergency services in their uniforms and of course the view of the coffin were a unique, emotional moment. “I cried a little, I have to admit that honestly.” In general, the mood in London was sad, “but far removed from the hysteria that Diana had,” says the Linz city guide. Of course you have to leave the church in the village: “After all, the queen was 96 years old.”
Was it worth the effort for you? “Absolutely. It was very important to me that I paid tribute to the Queen. I would have regretted it if I hadn’t been there,” says Kimeswenger. “It was a historic event that will never happen again for me.” And one that she will “definitely” never forget in her whole life. “I still tell that in the retirement home, even if I already have dementia. My roommates have to listen to that until the end.”
