Why the Queen is buried twice

Queen Elizabeth II will be buried twice on Monday. After an afternoon service in St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, the monarch will be buried in the royal crypt next to her husband Prince Philip, who died on April 9, 2021 at the age of 99. Her coffin stays there for only a short time. Because in the evening the couple, who have been married for 73 years, will be reburied in a private ceremony.

Elizabeth and Philip are buried in the small King George VI Memorial Chapel, a side chapel.

There are also the Queen’s parents, “Queen Mum” and King George VI., as well as the urn of her younger sister Princess Margaret, who was cremated at her own request – contrary to tradition.

At Philip’s funeral on April 17, 2021, it was already known that his grave would only be temporary.

We report on the funeral ceremonies in the live blog.
