Typhoon in Japan is ‘unprecedentedly dangerous’

The unusually violent typhoon “Nanmadol”, which was classified as “unprecedentedly dangerous”, killed two people in Japan and injured dozens of other residents. One person was reported missing on Monday. The power went out at times in hundreds of thousands of households, and rail and air traffic were severely affected.

More than four million households with almost ten million people on the severely affected south-western main island of Kyushu and in western Japan were called upon to seek shelter from the gusts of wind and heavy rain. The 14th typhoon of the season is likely to move northeast along the main island of Honshu with the capital Tokyo today, Tuesday, the weather bureau said.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has already postponed his departure for the UN General Assembly in New York to take care of crisis management.
