“Mama learns German”: Perger elementary school is also open to mothers

This autumn, the social committee of the municipality of Perg launched an initiative for the integration and language acquisition of immigrants. From now on, women and girls can take the language course “Mama Learns German” more or less free (ten euros per year).

The project was driven forward by the newly formed social committee. Its chairman David Lindinger (FPÖ) brought the Regional Competence Center for Integration (ReKI) in the person of Justine Kirchner to the committee. “She understood how to quickly convince the committee of the advantages for the city of Perg and so we will implement the project this autumn,” says Lindinger.

Helga Davy will be in charge of the course. She is a municipal councilor for the Greens in Perg and also a member of the municipal social committee. “By learning the language, a connection to society is only possible. Language is the key to integration,” says Lindinger. This is also underscored by Helga Davy, who has been running German courses herself for a number of years: “Mutual understanding is essential for a functioning coexistence.” In addition to “learning German” itself, the focus of the courses is also the contact between parents and school. Additional integrative educational modules provide information about the school and education system, educational issues, dealing with officials and authorities, but also about health and human rights. Striving for independence Because mastering the language helps to make better use of qualifications acquired in the home country, women in particular should be given the best possible support in their striving for independence. According to the initiators, this is also one of the reasons why the lessons take place in the elementary school in Perg – an environment that the mothers are familiar with and which helps to reduce fear of the unknown. These tailor-made courses will start in October. Two teaching units will then take place once a week until June. If necessary, childcare should also be set up during the courses.

An information evening will take place this week on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the elementary school in Perg. Registrations are possible here as well as by telephone at ReKI on 0732/66117142.
