Rising corona numbers – “but the situation is stable”

In the hospitals, 42 more corona patients were counted than the day before and 62 more than in the previous week. 64 patients were treated in the intensive care units – three more than the day before. The Austria-wide seven-day incidence rose from 337.0 to 410.4 per 100,000 inhabitants in one week.

According to Katharina Reich, chief medical officer in the Ministry of Health and head of the medical training commission, the current increase was to be expected due to falling temperatures, she explained in the “Ö1 Journal at eight” on Tuesday. It also depends on when school starts and on the fact that people tend to spend more time indoors in smaller spaces when the temperatures are cold, says Reich. “But it’s still a stable situation.” Test offers are still low-threshold, but will continue to be offered free of charge.

The effective reproduction number, which indicates how many other people are currently infecting an infected person, rose to 1.03 last Friday. This emerged from the published estimate by experts from AGES and TU Graz. A week earlier, the value was 0.95.

As of Monday, there were 53,376 active cases, up 2,801 from the day before. One person died as a result of a corona infection.

5,547 vaccinations were administered, of which 4,792 were booster injections. A total of 19,224,264 vaccinations against SARS-CoV-2 were carried out in Austria. 5,304,352 and thus 58.8 percent of Austrians were validly vaccinated on Monday.
