Gustavo Petro will go to the reopening of the border with Venezuela

In this sense, the Colombian president underlined the importance of this milestone representing “the end of the humanitarian crisis what, breaking human rightsaffected millions of people” and assured that it is “an important message to announce to the world” that Colombia is reestablishing relations with “a country that is an ally.”

As Gustavo Petro has previously announced, the opening of the borders is a first step in which air connections and cargo transport will resume. “We confirm the government’s commitment to reestablish brotherly relations,” he said on his Twitter profile.

This opening will put an end to seven years in which the border between Colombia and Venezuela remained practically closed, after the Venezuelan president, Nicholas Madurothe passage between the two countries was closed during the government of Juan Manuel Santos for the alleged presence of Colombian paramilitaries in its territory. A crisis that worsened with the expulsion of hundreds of Colombians from Venezuela.

Petro told Maduro of his willingness to restore “the full exercise of Human Rights” between the two countries upon his arrival at the presidency, after the outgoing Ivan Duke ended diplomatic relations in February 2019.
