Baby alarm in the Welser Tiergarten, where everyone is once again happy about special offspring. The offspring of the Lesser Green Macaws (Ara militaris) were successfully bred, two chicks hatched that currently still look a bit disheveled. The birds are considered endangered in the wild in South America because their habitat is being rapidly destroyed. They are strictly protected under the Washington Convention on Endangered Species.
The same applies to the jumping tamarins, they are also endangered. A young animal of this marmoset can currently be seen in Wels Zoo. The kune kune pigs, a rare breed of pig, have also grown, five little piglets are scurrying around in the enclosure.
Frowin Decker, club chairman of the “Friends of Welser Tiergarten”, emphasizes: “With the soldier’s macaws and the jumping tamarin offspring, the Welser Tiergarten proves once again that it plays in the top league when it comes to breeding programs. Many people know the Tiergarten as a park in the middle of the city great recreational value, but don’t even know that it also plays an important role in breeding endangered species.”
