Both subjects are suspected of being involved in the violent death of prosecutor Édgar Escobar that occurred on Monday morning in front of one of the prosecutor’s offices in the coastal city of Guayaquil. Édgar Escobar was part of a unit in charge of hate crimes and women based on gender.

The two alleged aggressors were arrested yesterday during an operation on a populous hill in Guayaquil, hit by a wave of crimes linked to drug trafficking that also hit the prisons with hundreds of deaths in massacres.

Both were transferred to the Cuartel Modelo Flagrancia Unit and placed under the orders of the judicial authorities in a police action in which a motorcycle and the weapon with which they would have shot the victim were seized.

Escobar’s murder coincides with the scandal over the disappearance of lawyer María Belén Bernal, 34, at a police station in Quito. The Attorney General’s Office also said Monday that the search for Bernal was continuing.

A week ago, the woman entered the Superior Police School (ESP) to visit her husband, Lieutenant Germán Cáceres. The officer has been on the run since he was questioned by prosecutors.

Ecuador registers high rates of gender violence. According to the same organization, at least 573 women have been murdered since 2014 in cases classified as femicides.
