Franco Foda has lost his job

The Swiss soccer champions reacted on Wednesday to the catastrophic start to the season under the 56-year-old, who was previously team boss of the Austrian national team. In the summer, Foda took on the difficult inheritance of his German compatriot André Breitenreiter. However, the long-time player and coach of Sturm Graz never really got off to a good start at FC Zurich.

Without some of the top performers of the outstanding previous season, the team was not up to expectations right from the start. Foda quickly came under pressure in Zurich and the liberation did not succeed.

The FCZ made the historically worst start of a reigning Swiss champion, is still without a win after eight rounds of the Super League and is penultimate with two points. In the Europa League, Zurich started the group stage with two defeats. Most recently, it was the last painful defeat under Foda on Sunday in the Cup sixteenth final with a 2:3 after extra time against the lower-class Lausanne-Sport.

In his active career with Sturm Graz (1997 – 2001), the German was champion twice and took part in the Champions League three times. As a coach, he led the Styrians, whom he coached for a total of nine years, to the championship title in 2010/11. Foda switched from Sturm at the turn of the year 2017/18 to the ÖFB national team, with whom he celebrated a historic success at the 2021 European Championship by reaching the round of 16. After the following disappointing performances, his contract was not renewed in spring 2022.
