Pope Francis considers it crazy to think of using nuclear weapons in Ukraine

Referring to his recent trip to Kazakhstan before a crowd gathered for his general audience in the Saint Peter’s Squarethe pontiff praised the Central Asian country for giving up nuclear weapons after its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

“This was brave. At a time in this tragic war when some think of nuclear weapons – which is crazy – this country said ‘no’ to nuclear weapons from the beginning,” the Pope said.

Putin ordered the first mobilization of Russia since the Second World War and backed a plan to annex parts of Ukraine, warning the West that he was serious when he said he would be willing to use nuclear weapons to defend his country.

Francis, who did not name Russia or Putin, told the crowd about a conversation he had with the cardinal on Tuesday. Konrad Krajowskihis head of charities, which is delivering aid in the Ukraine.

Vatican media said Krajewski, who is Polish, had to run for cover after being caught in a light firefight last week while delivering aid with a Catholic bishop, a Protestant bishop and a Ukrainian soldier. He said that too visited mass graves on the outskirts of Izium, in northeastern Ukraine.

“He spoke to me of the pain of these people, of the savage acts, of the monstrosity, of the tortured bodies they find. Let us join these people, so noble and martyred,” Pope Francis said.
