According to reports from the Kurdish rights group hengawSecurity forces have killed seven protesters, three of them on Tuesday, in or near Kurdish areas of northwestern Iran, where unrest has been particularly intense and deadly.
Authorities have denied that security forces killed protesters.
Hengaw reported that 450 people had been injured, in addition to the seven Kurdish protesters he said had been killed by “direct fire” by government forces in the last four days. Reuters was unable to independently confirm reports of casualties.
Hengaw also said that he had Internet access cut off in the province of Kurdistana measure that would prevent the sharing of videos from a region where authorities have previously cracked down on unrest from the kurdish minority.
No access to Instagram in Iran
The internet outage observatory netblocks and residents said that Iran has restricted access to Instagram, the only major social media platform that authorities don’t routinely block. A high-ranking official recently said it had some 48 million users in the country.
The Communications Minister said he had been misquoted after media outlets said authorities could cut off Internet services for security reasons.
Amini’s death has sparked anger over issues including freedoms in the Islamic Republic and an economy reeling from sanctions. The women have stirred and burned their veils during the protests, and some have cut their hair in public.
The supreme leader, the Ayatollah Ali Khameneidid not mention the protests – among the worst unrest in Iran since last year’s street clashes over water shortages – during a speech on Wednesday to mark the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war.
Kurdistan’s police chief, speaking to the semi-official Tasnim news agency on Wednesday, confirmed four deaths earlier this week in the Kurdistan province. He claimed they were shot with a type of bullet not used by the security forces, and said the “gangs” wanted to blame the police and security agents.
