A coach with a total of 32 occupants fell down a slope near Bad Mitterndorf (Liezen district) and overturned, as the Styrian state police announced. The salvage work had been started “as far as possible during the night”, it said.
According to the police, the coach from the Styrian district of Hartberg-Fürstenfeld was on its way to Grundlsee. According to the Liezen fire brigade association, the bus was traveling on an unpaved path for reasons that are still unclear. After coming off the same road, the vehicle fell over a high embankment and rolled over once. After that, the bus came to a standstill on its wheels right next to a pond. According to the fire department, all occupants freed themselves, nobody was trapped.
There were numerous forces – in addition to the Red Cross, fire brigade and police also two night helicopters – in use. Two seriously injured people were flown to the hospitals in St. Pölten and Salzburg, and two other seriously injured people were taken to the hospitals in Bad Ischl and Rottenmann by ambulance. 20 slightly injured were taken to the Schladming and Bad Aussee clinics, among others.
Eight uninjured bus passengers were housed in the armory of the Kainisch volunteer fire department. The fire brigade then transported the people to their accommodation. The slightly injured were also taken to their quarters by the Red Cross after the examination in the hospital, the fire brigade reported in a broadcast.
