“The Crown”: What is known about Season 5 so far

There is no official trailer yet. However, in the fall of 2021, the streaming service announced the release date of the next season in a short video that also featured British actress Imelda Staunton as the Queen’s new cast member.

Dramatic divorces, tragic deaths

Season 5 will show the Windsors’ life during the sometimes dramatic events and relationships of the 1990s. Numerous divorces and tragic deaths mark the decade for the British royal family. The focus remains Queen Elizabeth, who has to deal with the outrageous marital crises within her family, especially in aristocratic circles. Princess Anne is leaving her hapless marriage to Mark Phillips behind, and her brother Prince Andrew is also divorcing his wife Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson after her infidelity became public knowledge. Much more dramatic, however, is the fact that Charles and Diana’s marriage continues to deteriorate. The divorce of the heir to the throne could completely shake the monarchy. In addition, the Queen also has to cope with a massive financial crisis after a major fire at Buckingham Palace. The accidental death of Princess Diana in 1997 finally becomes the touchstone of the monarch.

The childhood of William and Harry should also be discussed. How far the series, which has covered a decade per season so far, will tell the story of the Windsors this time is still uncertain. The events of the 1990s may also continue in Season 6.

Imelda Staunton, an actress well-versed in royal series, is entering the new season as Queen Elizabeth. She succeeds Claire Foy (seasons 1 and 2) and Olivia Colman (seasons 3 and 4). Without a doubt, Staunton faces the biggest challenges of the role compared to her predecessors: she puts her face to the Queen at a point in the monarch’s life that the majority of viewers know first-hand and not just from old black-and-white television reports. Staunton is known from other blockbusters and series hits: From the fifth part of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter saga, she embodied the hated teacher Dolores Umbridge, who takes over the Hogwarts magic school. She can also be seen as a lady-in-waiting in the also celebrated royal hit series “Downton Abbey”.

Jonathan Pryce will take on the role of Prince Philip from Season 5, while Lesley Manville will be seen as Princess Margret. Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki stars as Princess Diana, while Dominic West takes on the role of Josh O’Connor’s mature Prince Charles.

Unexpected finale

As fans eagerly await the start of the upcoming season, more and more information about the final season 6 is becoming known. Previously, there had been announcements that “The Crown” would end with Season 5. However, the success and the complexity of the story should have shattered these plans quite quickly. The main cast will follow the series to the end, and the story of Prince William and Kate Middleton will also be part of the series. British up-and-coming actor Rufus Kampa is set to star as a young William in the aftermath of Princess Diana’s death. Ed McVey will then play the prince in young adulthood when he met Kate Middleton. Meg Bellamy plays the Princess of Wales, who is now Princess of Wales after the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

While the start of filming for season 5 had to be postponed in spring 2020 due to the corona virus, the series interrupted filming for season 6 for a short time after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The streaming service said production was paused “as a mark of respect” for the monarch, who died on September 8 at the age of 96 after 70 years on the throne. Filming also halted on the day of the Queen’s funeral, according to Netflix. There is still no indication of when the final season can be expected.
