A survey conducted by the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper revealed that the 56% of those consulted oppose the event and 38% support it. Other recent polls indicate similar levels of opposition.

In this sense, the prime minister fumio kishida assured that the local and international achievements of Abe, the Prime Minister oldest in the country -eight years of mandate, between 2012 and 2020-, justify a state funeral, which are unusual in Japan. Also, he said that he is willing to respond to Parliament’s queries about the topic.

His government’s approval slipped in recent weeks, in part because of the funeral decision. Some critics object to spend public money to honor a politicianwhile others consider that a state funeral minimizes the Abe’s nationalist views and his alleged cronyism.
