As the police reported on Sunday, it is a 50-year-old woman from Vienna and a 44-year-old from St. Pölten. They were reported missing on Saturday evening, and they were found dead around 10:45 p.m. during a large-scale search operation in the Gindlhorn area in the Stainach-Pürgg municipality (Liezen district).
The experienced mountaineers were adequately equipped and set off on the tour as a two-person rope team. A fall of around 150 meters in steep terrain cost the two their lives. As the police said when asked by APA, the women were connected to a rope when the accident happened, but not secured to the rock. You may have lost your footing. The investigations into the exact course of the accident were initially still in progress.
The tour is in the 6th level of difficulty, i.e. moderately difficult, said Enrico Radaelli, spokesman for the mountain rescue service. Two helicopters were also involved in the search operation. The operation at night when it was raining and there was a massive risk of falling rocks was very difficult for the rescue workers, said Radaelli. “For the mountain rescuers, not only is the operation at night more risky, it is also mentally more demanding.” The corpses were recovered by the police helicopter on Sunday morning.
