Probably the most beautiful “sheet metal” of her career

The sister boat with Magdalena and Katharina Lobnig was 1.81 seconds short of a medal in the final of the Rowing World Championships in Racice yesterday – the Carinthians came fourth. But even without a happy ending, the two have written a little rowing fairy tale in the past few days. Magdalena, who came third in the Olympics, got on board with her full-time sister, who was two years older than her, just for fun and a desire for new attractions. Starting with practically no expectations, the sisters survived round after round and finished fourth, the best Austrian result of the title fights in Racice. “We won fourth place and didn’t lose,” said 32-year-old Magdalena. For Katharina it was the first big final of her rowing career: “I would have loved to win the medal, but it was megazach. In the end it just wasn’t enough, but we can be very proud of ourselves.”

In 6:54.62 minutes, Lobnig/Lobnig were 6.85 seconds behind the world champions Nicoleta-Ancuta Bodnar/Simona Geanina Radis from Romania. The newly formed ÖRV boat set an Austrian best time in this class in the semi-finals in 6:50.17, which would have been enough for silver yesterday (under the same conditions). “The fun has definitely come back,” said Magdalena Lobnig in conclusion.
