For this purpose, a previously unlit street in the district of Haid was equipped with three photovoltaic street lamps. The costs amount to 10,000 euros and are only a third of the amount that would have been due for laying an underground cable with conventional lanterns.
For Mayor Christian Partoll, the advantages of such a system are obvious, especially with regard to energy self-sufficiency and reduced light pollution. The FP politician emphasizes that the LED lamps can be individually programmed and intelligently controlled – those in the street in question work via motion sensors. The feedback so far has been very positive, and if the system proves itself, further expansion of this type of street lighting will be discussed.
In view of the rising electricity costs, there is a need for action; up to now, around 100,000 euros have been spent annually in the municipality. In view of the price developments, a fivefold or sixfold increase is practically fixed, according to Partoll, in the worst case even more. Another point that could be addressed with street lighting is a reduction in the switch-on times and thus the lighting duration. Switching on only every second street lamp is not possible due to the wiring. The head of the city sees the federal government and the EU called upon to support the municipalities, such as the association of municipalities, he is committed to an electricity price brake for municipalities. “We don’t want to speculate with tax money, but at the moment we’re forced to because we wouldn’t have any electricity contracts anymore.”
