AMAG won the Energy Globe Upper Austria for Austria’s largest rooftop photovoltaic system – and the aluminum experts based in Braunau/Ranshofen are already working on doubling solar power production.

PV power is already being “harvested” on 60,000 square meters. In addition to the 55,000 square meters of collector area that have been in operation since autumn 2021, 5000 square meters were recently added. On an area the size of nine soccer fields, 7.3 GWh of electricity would be produced per year – converted to the needs of 2,000 households, according to AMAG, which is already working on doubling the PV capacity. According to the company, the solar power generated is used exclusively in AMAG and supplements the electricity mix that has been 100 percent from renewable sources for several years.

The victory at the Energy Globe Upper Austria in the fire category is a confirmation of the chosen path. “We are pleased about the valuable recognition of our achievements in connection with the sustainable development of the Ranshofen site. The photovoltaic system, which we are already planning to double, makes a contribution to our own green energy supply and thus also to the implementation of our plan for decarbonization”, says AMAG- CEO Gerald Mayer.

According to the Energy Globe jury, the construction of a PV system of this unique dimension is one of the building blocks of AMAG’s sustainability strategy and the contribution to achieving Austria’s climate goals, in addition to AMAG’s main focus on recycling and the circular economy as well as many other measures in the area of energy efficiency in their rating. AMAG is currently building a bridge for cyclists and pedestrians in Braunau to make it safer for them to cross the B156 in the area of the factory entrance and to improve the conditions for non-motorized traffic.

1.5 million euros will be invested in it, with the aluminum group bearing most of the costs itself. A bridge made of recyclable aluminum and wood will be built. The ramp will be backfilled with lifting material from previous construction work.

AMAG is considered a leading Austrian premium supplier of high-quality aluminum products that are used in the aircraft, automotive, sporting goods, lighting, mechanical engineering, construction and packaging industries. According to the company, the Canadian smelter in Alouette, in which AMAG holds a 20 percent stake, produces high-quality primary aluminum with an exemplary eco-balance.

In the AMAG components division, headquartered in Übersee am Chiemsee, the competence in the manufacture of ready-to-install metal parts for the aerospace industry is bundled.
