According to the local press, Astesiano was questioned on multiple occasions since 2003 for theft, fraud, misappropriation and damage. The newspaper The Observer reported that his arrest was due to the falsification of documents for the issuance of Russian passports.
The president did not comment on the press information about Astesiano, and stressed that “he has no criminal record.”
Asked if he will continue in his position, he replied that “everyone is innocent until proven guilty”.

Lacalle Pou said that he met Astesiano, his chief of custody since 2019, during an electoral campaign in 1999, and that he later worked on campaigns for his father, former president Luis Alberto Lacalle, and for his own team in 2004, 2009 and 2014.
