Ukraine calls for more weapons as Russia finalizes annexation of several regions

The request for more weapons comes despite repeated warnings from Moscow that it might use its nuclear arsenal to protect these territories.

The authorities placed by Moscow in these four regions, Kherson Y Zaporizhia in the south, and Donetsk Y Lugansk in the east, they announced the results on Tuesday night and this Wednesday began the paperwork to join Russia.

kyiv’s allies in NATO and the European Union denounced these votes as illegal and announced that they would not recognize their result. Even China, close to Moscow, called for respect for “the territorial integrity of all countries.” On Wednesday, the Ukrainian government urged its allies to translate their criticism into concrete action.

Ukraine’s request

“Ukraine asks the EU, NATO and the Group of Seven (G7) increase its pressure on Russia immediately and significantly, including the imposition of new sanctions tough, and significantly increase its military aid to Ukraine,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.

In his statement he listed his requirements: “tanks, fighter planes, armored vehicles, long-range artillery, anti-aircraft material and anti-missile defense equipment.”

The referendums represent a turning point in the war after the successful counteroffensive launched by Ukraine in recent weeks that pushed Putin to declare a partial mobilization of reservists.

turning point in the war

Together, Kherson, Zaporizhia, Donetsk and Lugansk constitute a major land corridor between Russia and Crimea, which Moscow annexed in 2014 in a process similar to the current one. Counting this peninsula, Moscow would control about 20% of all of Ukrainewhose troops have recaptured important swaths of land, especially in the northeast.

Russian deputies are expected to vote quickly on the incorporation of these territories and, according to the country’s press agencies, the president Vladimir Putin could sign annexation laws by the end of the week.
