Israeli forces are on alert during the great Jewish holidays that began on Sunday with Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, and on to Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
A source from the Jenin local administration stated that among those killed in the operation was the brother of Raad Hazem, who was accused by Israel of shooting dead three Israelis in April in Tel Aviv and killed by soldiers after the fact.
The Israeli army confirmed the operation and said in a statement that its troops killed “two suspects involved in a series of recent attacks,” the AFP news agency.
“When the house of the two suspects was surrounded, an explosive device exploded and the suspects opened fire in the direction of the security forces, who replied (…) killing the two suspects,” the note added.
The statement said one of the two dead was Abed Hazem, Raad’s brother, who was wanted by the Israeli army. His father, Fathi, is still wanted.
Since March, 20 people have been killed in a series of anti-Israeli attacks. The Army multiplied its operations in the West Bank, a territory occupied since 1967 by Israel.
These operations are very frequent in Nablus and Jenin, where there is intense activity by Palestinian groups demanding the return of the occupied territory.
The operations are often accompanied by incidents with the local population or fighters and have so far left dozens dead on the Palestinian side and led to the arrest of 1,500 people, according to Israeli army chief Aviv Kohavi.
In reaction to this new Israeli operation, Nabil Abu Rudeina, spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, accused Israel of “threatening security and stability by pursuing a policy of escalation.”
Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid promised earlier this month that he would not hesitate to “act where the Palestinian authorities do not maintain order.”
