The official revealed that among the armed groups that have expressed their willingness to ceasefire and suspend the violence are the two dissidents of the former guerrilla of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) who are called the Central Staff and the Second Marquetalia.
The first faction did not accept the 2016 peace agreement, while the second returned to the armed struggle, considering that the pact was not honored.
Rueda also mentioned the Gaitanista self-defense groups of Colombiaalso known as the Gulf Clan, the Self-defense groups of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and other armed structures in several large Colombian cities that he did not specify.
Gustavo Petro, the first leftist president in the history of Colombia, is preparing to restart a peace negotiation with the leftist guerrillas of the National Liberation Army (ELN) which began in the administration of Juan Manuel Santos and that was interrupted in the government of Ivan Duke who finished his term in August.
What is in game
The illegal armed groups, with a presence in remote jungle and mountainous regions of the country, have more than 6,000 combatants, according to security sources.
Both leftist rebels and criminal gangs engage in extortion, murder, drug trafficking, and illegal gold mining.
The leftist president announced his intention to advance in peace talks with the rebel groups, among which the FARC dissidents would be included, and to begin a process of subjugation of the criminal gangs involved in the drug trafficking who would receive legal benefits such as reductions in penalties in exchange for the delivery of goods and information on routes.
But he also proposed at the end of August a multilateral ceasefire for all illegal armed groups operating in the country as part of his initiative to promote a peace process to put an end to the violent armed conflict that, in six decades, left some 450,000 dead.
“We are exploring. The peace office is exploring legal mechanisms to allow the transition of armed groups to the rule of law,” concluded Rueda.
