Russia to annex four Ukrainian provinces this Friday

Putin will deliver a speech after the signing ceremony of the treaties at the Saint George Hall from the Russian government headquarters, the spokesman added.

The annexation, which was long awaited, will come after referendums on joining Russia held in recent days in those four provinces in the east and south of Ukraine, which according to their leaders ended with an overwhelming “yes” victory.

USA The US and other Western countries supplying Ukraine with arms to defend against Russia’s invasion launched seven months ago have condemned the referendums as illegal and rigged and said they will never recognize their results.

“Under threats and sometimes even at gunpoint, people were taken from their homes to vote,” German Foreign Minister said today, Annalena Baerbock.

“This is the opposite of free and democratic elections. And this is the opposite of peace. It is a dictated peace. No citizen will be safe as long as Russian dictates prevail in the occupied territories of Ukraine. No citizen will be free,” he added.

In Moscow, Peskov said that Putin will meet, on the sidelines of tomorrow’s ceremony, with the pro-Russian leaders of the four provinces of Ukraine that will be incorporated, which are four of the five occupied by the Russian army, the Tass news agency reported. .

The Ukrainian separatist leaders who have controlled territories in eastern Lugansk and Donetsk since 2014 and the authorities installed this year by Russia in southern Zaporizhia and Kherson arrived in Moscow last night by plane, the Russian press reported.

Yesterday, pro-Russian officials had already sent “official” requests to Putin to incorporate the four provinces into Russia.

Russia has warned that, in case of annexation, the provinces will become part of its territory, so it could use nuclear weapons to defend them.

The four provinces to be annexed are contiguous, creating an uninterrupted corridor from Russia to Crimea, the Ukrainian Black Sea peninsula that Moscow annexed in 2014.

Its control would allow a better defense of Crimea, where Russia has anchored its Black Sea fleet.

The international community, including Argentina, has never recognized Russian sovereignty over Crimea, and is expected to ignore the annexation of the four provinces.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has promised to recover all the territories that Russia took from it.

Peskov said that the agreements on the territories’ entry into the Russian Federation will be signed before the Federation Council, the Russian Senate, considers related issues.

“In any case, there will be a signature first,” Peskov said, responding to a question about why the event is scheduled for September 30 and the Federation Council meeting only for October 4.

According to Russian news agencies, the Russian Parliament must vote in the coming days on a text formalizing the annexation. A speech by Putin to deputies and senators is also expected.

In Moscow there seem to be festivities planned for tomorrow. Municipal authorities announced the closure of some downtown streets, especially around the Red Square, where a stage is being set up, AFP news agencies reported.

As Russia prepares for annexation, its military continued attacks in Ukraine, according to Ukrainian authorities.

At least three people, including a child, were killed last night in a missile attack on the Ukrainian province of Dnipropetrovsk, reported the governor, Valentin Reznichenko.

Five other people, including a 12-year-old girl, were injured, he added.
