“As the largest democracy in Latin America, your country is an important example for the world of a stable and solid electoral system, whose results must respect winners and losers in the elections,” Bernie Sanders told Brazilians in his video message, without declaring their explicit support for any candidate.
“Political violence or the threat of it is always unacceptable”added the senator, who warned that “the world is watching” these elections in Brazil, at a time when “democracy is under attack throughout the world.”
The initiative promoted by Bernie Sanders in the United States Senate, of a non-binding nature, recommends that the government of that country immediately approve the results of the elections if they were considered free and fair by observers and international organizations.
On the other hand, the text asks reconsider relations with Brazil in case a government is installed by undemocratic means or military coup.
The constant criticism of Jair Bolsonaro
President Jair Bolsonaro has repeatedly questioned the reliability of the electoral system based on urns electronics in Brazil and, without evidence, accuses the electoral authorities of a lack of transparency, an attitude that has generated fears that he will not recognize an eventual defeat.
The president is second in the polls, with 33% of voting intentions, 14 percentage points behind Lula da Silva, who leads with 47%, according to the Datafolha Institute.
The Liberal Party, to which the president belongs, released a document on Wednesday in which it questions, based on an audit, the Superior Electoral Court (TSE)which watches over the process, questioning the security of electronic ballot boxes, according to the Brazilian press.
The TSE, chaired by Alexander of Moraesa frequent target of criticism from the president, rejected the party’s remarks and said the document is a “clear attempt” to “entangle and disrupt” Sunday’s general election.
